Story behind the song
It uses the poetic conceit of "systole and diastole" (hence: "A Heartbeat") as the observations start in a room expand to the outside, get global then return to the room. The difficult to hear lyrics were intentional, I was very much under the spell of Loop and Godflesh at the time.
