A love song.
If I Die Before I Awaken
©2005 Jeffrey Waldman
We work so hard, that’s just the way, hand to mouth and day to day
One more battle, in the fray, what’s the purpose anyway
When I look at you, you can’t disguise the weary look that’s in your eyes
We have to slow down otherwise the fire inside us dies
So if I die before I awaken, if I pass before you go
I’ll tell you, so you’re not mistaken,
I love you more than you’ll ever know
I will never be able to give you back what you have given
Even when the sky is darkest, you have made my life worth living
Every day when I awaken, I thank G-d that he made you and
I thank you for the life you’ve given me, and what we’ve come to be
We have to savor precious time, every note and every rhyme
Even though it’s an uphill climb, life is so sublime.
So if I die before I awaken, if I pass before you go
I’ll tell you, so you’re not mistaken,
I love you more than you’ll ever know
If I die before I awaken, there’ll be storm before the calm
Don’t let your heart go on achin
Don’t cry for me when I’m gone.
