Story behind the song
Worked out an arrangement for Summertime for the rec.music.makers.songwriting group. Figured our that St James Infirmary would use same chords...
Lyrics
It was down in old Joe's bar-room,
On a corner by the square,
They were serving drinks as usual,
And the usual crowd was there.
On my left stood big Joe McKennedy,
His eyes a bloodshot red,
He turned to the crowd around him,
And here’s the very words that he said:
-
Summertime, an' the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin' an' the cotton is high
Oh, Yo daddy's rich an' yo' ma is good lookin'
So hush, little baby, don't you cry
One mornin, you goin' to rise up singin'
you'll spread yo' wings an' you'll take the sky
But till that mornin', there's a nothin' can harm you
With daddy & mammy standin' by
-
I went down to St’ James Infirmary
saw my baby there
All stretched out on a table,
So pale, so cold, so fair.
