Sift one cup folk, one cup R&B, one cup blues, one tablespoon jazz. Mix in spirit of Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, and Greg Brown. Add to taste: dry humor, faith against odds, bloody heartbreak. Bake 5o-some years in hard knocks oven. Add spark of Goddess. Serve with acoustic guitar and baritone vocals.

Story behind the song
Actually, I wrote this to be sung by a woman. An angry woman. A woman who's angry at me. With good cause. I haven't found the right angry woman to sing it yet, so in this version I sing it myself.
Lyrics
Too Much Truth I put up my shield, but your words cut through me. They cut like a saw, the pain subdues me When you open your mouth, the sound goes direct to my heart Try to shut the gate, but the lock just shatters The guards run away, but it hardly matters Threads that connected unravel, the sheet comes apart Chorus: Don’t tell me the truth, don’t tell me a lie You can’t make it better, don’t even try You can say that you’re sorry, but don’t tell me why Just pretend you don’t see, I’ll pretend I won’t cry Like the rattlesnake’s fangs or the scorpion’s stinger Like the chain saw’s whine when it cuts through the finger If love is like this, turn it off, throw it out, lock the door Don’t say it again; I won’t ask any questions I can’t take any more of your brutal confessions Good intentions like knives, my blood stains the floor Chorus Bridge: Don’t even try Don’t tell me why Too much truth is worse than a lie The wall of flame jumps over the fire break Red trees crashing into the blue lake That’s how it feels, it burns like the forest on fire The fact is bad, your explanation’s worse Your well-meant compassion hurts more than a curse If truth is so great, hook your own heart up to the wire Chorus Copyright 2004, Bruce McKinney
