There's a scene in the movie "Ben-Hur" (the one with Charlton Heston) where Jesus is dying on the cross and His blood was flowing down the cross. Then it mingles with a stream flowing down the hill with the rain into the valley of the lepers where Judah's mother and sister are. And as the blood reaches the place where they are , they are healed of their disease. That movie scene was the inspiration of this song that I started writing back in 1980.
Crimson flowed that day at Calvary
Like a gentle healing rain
Love conquered hatred on that day
Mercy triumphed through the pain
There's no other sacrifice
That could wash away the stain
Sin just could not stand against
That gentle crimson rain
My life was filled with deadly pride
My heart was stained with selfish sin
But Jesus came and with His blood
Applied a crimson balm that healed me deep within
I thought I'd strayed to far away
I thought I'd strayed to far away
I thought I'd never see His face
But love would shower over me
With the crimson flow of grace
(chorus)
Crimson flowed that day at Calvary
Like a gentle healing rain
Love conquered hatred on that day
Mercy triumphed through the pain
There's no other sacrifice
That could wash away the stain
Sin just could not stand against
That gentle crimson rain
(bridge)
Let it rain...O Lord
Till we feel the mighty flood
Send the rain...O Lord
Of the Savior's healing blood
chorus)
Crimson flowed that day at Calvary
Like a gentle healing rain
Love conquered hatred on that day
Mercy triumphed through the pain
There's no other sacrifice
That could wash away the stain
Sin just could not stand against
That gentle crimson rain
(outro)
Yes There's no other sacrifice
That could wash away the stain
Sin just could not stand against
That gentle crimson rain
