I had a garage band in my teens with my best buddy at the time, Steve. A collection of the songs from that time are to be found at https://www.soundclick.com/retrograde_pop This is a song about that time in my life.
As explained, my teen band from many years back is the inspiration. This song went through various distillations and variations before it finally emerged in this fashion.
I remember Garbage Band,
The rock band of my teens.
I remember learning chords,
And hanging out with Steve.
We played medieval,
Sang about old cars,
Operatic pickles,
Very silly,
But all ours.
Steve would bang piano,
Or wail on the lead.
I'd invent the lyrics,
And simple melodies.
This went on for hours,
Then stretched on for years.
We would play,
Both night and day,
Through smiles and through tears.
Why do I remember 'Way back when'?
It seems more important now than then.
Why do I make so much of it all?
Living in the 'You know, I recall...'
Our albums had these crazy names,
Like 'Notches in the Chair'
One was called 'Foot Fungus'
And 'Creeping Black Despair'
One was 'Garbage Eater'
'Night Beaters' even worse,
'The Curse of the Forgotten Toilet'
That was quite the curse!
The mythic distillation of those days,
Haunts me in some most peculiar ways.
Walking through the twilight into night.
Looking at the broken clouds for light.
