Story behind the song
Its been nearly 3 months since I last composed music for one of the psalms. I thought, There must be other psalms that would lend themselves well to a musical composition. Just then the number 122 came into my head, so I checked out Psalm 122. It looked good, but the complete message was not entirely clear. So, I decided I would play one line of verse and then a sentence or two of personal commentary on that verse. I did this for each of the nine verses. This is not meant to add anything to the Bible, because whoever does that is cursed (Revelations 22:18). It is just meant to help explain it, as was done in Nehemiah 8:8. So, half of the song is the inspired word of God, and the other half is the fallible word of man, but will hopefully help clarify the message. My commentary is kind of like a personal psalm to the LORD. Application: This psalm is one of the psalms of ascent, which the people of Israel would sing as they traveled in groups to Jerusalem for religious festivals. The psalm talks about the benefits and blessings received when we worship in the house of the LORD and includes a prayer for His people.
Lyrics
1 I was glad when they said to me, Let us go into the house of the LORD. Oh God, it is so good to be in Your family; to be welcomed into Your house. 2 Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem! All the earth is Yours, oh LORD. Wherever we are, were still living in Your city. 3 Jerusalem is built as a city that is compact together, where the tribes go up, Being able to bring Your entire family together for worship is a wondrous thing. 4b the tribes of the LORD, to the Testimony of Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. Your people come together to hear Your instructions. We are so thankful for Your word. 5 For thrones are set there for judgment, the thrones of the house of David. Judgment and justice proceeds from Your house, and the saints will judge the world (1 Co.6:2) 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May they prosper who love you. We pray for peace among Your people, that prosperity may come to them. 7 Peace be within your walls, prosperity within your palaces. We know our peace is found in You. We find success in Your kingdom. 8 For the sake of my brethren and companions, I will now say, Peace be within you. All Your people are our people. We all find security in You. 9 Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek your good. Because Your house is our refuge, we will exalt You all our days!
