a poignant folk-punk prose poem (that was originally written for guitar and voice, but you know what they say about the best-laid plans...)

orange boy is the sweetest boy on earth
orange boy is the kindest boy on earth
not a mean bone in his body
not a mean streak in his heart
orange boy is the nicest boy around
orange boy is very curious, in every sense of the word
orange boy is very funny, in every sense of the word
orange boy is very cultured
orange boy is very smart
orange boy is very sensitive
orange boy is very sharp
orange boy's profoundly kind and sweet nature
orange boy's keen sense of right and wrong
is at odds with the revolting
dumb and nasty world he dwells in
‘cause he can tell when things are crooked
and he feels it when things are askew
and he can't help but try and make sense
of the mess all around him
orange boy is very jealous of all the blessed souls
who don't seem to have a care in the world
who just simply seem to get along,
who don't have very many questions,
who don't seem to notice the general oddness of it all
who think orange boy is the eccentric
who think orange boy’s the one who’s odd
and who make fun of orange boy
who tease him taunt him and who mock
and orange boy loses it
and orange boy lashes out
and orange boy screams to high heaven
and he wants to punch your lights out
and when orange boy finally calms down
he feels like shit ‘cause he knows that he went too far
and he thinks to himself :
“Orange boy I sure hope that’s not who you are”
orange boy seeks reassurance
orange boy seeks to escape
to the comfortable and the familiar
worlds in his head
and orange boy is quite reluctant
to undertake anything new
is orange boy afraid, or is he plain weary of
yet more alarming experiences that’ll strike him as
odd or annoying, exasperating, unfair,
shocking, mean, and meaningless,
unacceptable, incomprehensible
and might push him over the edge
and make him angry all over again.
Try to see the world through orange boy's frown
Try to see it as it is, all upside down
And try to fix your local bit of it
or at least give orange boy a break
yeah cut orange boy some slack
and get off orange boy’s back
be thankful that people like him have the will to strive
and marvel at orange boy’s every smile.
