What should I say? What should I play? How do I connect with these people? Oh... the drama of it all!
A song about public presentation of anything we are passionate about. Originally wrote it when performing with a gospel rock band. All these years later I have realized that it applies to what I do most Sundays... namely present a message from a pulpit, but I think it applies to anybody who tries to share a dream in a public setting. It can be a terrifying, yet rewarding task, as you look out at an audience (or congregation!)
Enjoyed the playing on this one. The introduction features my Hayman 1010 guitar... the tone of which (recorded without effects) seemed to suit the riff so well. My Yamaha Bass likewise just seemed to love playing this one. And the Les Paul kicks in at the end... it's scary you can have this much fun in a small home studio! B ut I'd love to play it live one day (in the presence of a sea of faces) with a full band. Oh well. We can dream!
Staring at a Sea of Faces
Adrian J Pratt 1978
As I stand here upon the stage
Staring out at a sea of faces
I see inquiring minds peering though frightened eyes
And I wonder what should I say to you tonight?
As i stand and play my guitar
A thousand thoughts flow through my mind
I wonder who you are and what you're doing here
And I wonder what should I play for you tonight?
What should I play for you tonight?
And everybody's here for a reason
But not everybody knows why they're here
And everyone can feel the music
And everybody has their own kind of fear
And all that I do tonight people will be watching
And everything I play people will hear
And everything I do, and everything I see and everything I say
Affects the way this whole place is feeling.
(Instrumental)
What can I say to you to make you understand?
What can I say to you to make you feel what I feel?
What can I say to you that will touch your heart?
What can I say to you? Tell me what can I do...
I want to touch your heart.
Playing the music loud now
People start to move their feet
The music moves up a tempo
I'm rocking to a stronger beat
And if you don't like loud music
The chances are you won't like me
Because I grew up loud and I love the sound
Of music that moves my feet
I love playing music
That makes people move
I love to see people having a good time
But most of all I like to make people think.
(Instrumental)
As I stand here upon the stage
Staring out at a sea of faces
I wonder who you are and what you're doing here
And I wonder what should I play for you tonight?
