Story behind the song
Roger Waters "Welcome To The Machine" This is my instrumental version of Pink Floyds classic from their 1975 album 'Wish You Were Here' My version is quite a bit slower, and more relaxed than the original, but I tried to keep the 'mechanical' vibe going. Besides being instrumental, it also features lots of electric guitar, instead of the originals sparse acoustic parts amongst lots of lush synths. I tried to also keep Roger Waters genius 'drum-less' rhythm section which used bass and the Putney VCS-3 synth which pulsed from left to right in a dizzying swirl. Guitars used; my customized Strat for all the guitar parts, and my Carvin DC127 with the Fishman TriplePlay wireless synth for the pads, baritone pan pipe and bass which make up the pulsing bottom of the rhythm section. The pipe organ, piano, FX and shaker rhythm are played on my AKAI MPK261
Lyrics
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine. Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been. You've been in the pipeline, filling in time, provided with toys and Scouting for Boys. You bought a guitar to punish your ma, And you didn't like school, and you know you're nobody's fool, So welcome to the machine. Welcome my son, welcome to the machine. What did you dream? It's alright we told you what to dream. You dreamed of a big star, He played a mean guitar, He always ate in the Steak Bar. He loved to drive in his Jaguar. So welcome to the machine. Roger Waters 1975
