This is the band page for a musical I wrote called "Children and Parents".
The play was intended to be performed by children and adults with the main theme exp
Story behind the song
After the Bum's song, he tries to get the children to talk about what their doing so far from home. He asks them if they're runaways, and Charley says, "That's right, but we don't need any help from you." Kelly says, "Charley, don't talk to him!"
The bum's face softens as he says, "I had a brother named Charley. We ran away when we were about your age- our dad used to beat us all the time. Probably the same with you kids."
Jamie tells him," It's not like that- our parents love us. We just wanted to teach them a lesson."
The bum's face hardens again as he says," A lesson! I'll teach you a lesson!"
He grabs Jamie and she screams. the other kids try to help her, and Charley picks up a board and hits the bum on the head, which knocks him out. The children run out of the shack and on down the road. After they calm down, they decide they want to go home. They know they can't make it back that night, so they find a place to spend the night in the forest. They sing the fifth song of the musical.
Lyrics
[Jamie] I have a friend
I know ... somehow things seem better
[Kelly] I have a friend
I hope ... friendship lasts forever
Chorus:
[J. & K. ] There is someone I can depend on--
[Jamie] My friend and me
[J. & K.] For as long as we stay together--
[Kelly] That's the way it will be
[Charley] I have a friend
Someone ... always there beside me
I have a friend
I feel ... love that's deep inside me
Chorus:
[J. & K.] There is someone I can depend on--
[Charley] My friend and me
[J. & K.] For as long as we stay together--
[Charley] That's the way it will be
[J. & K.] I have a friend
[Charley] I know ... somehow things are better
[J. & K.] I have a friend
[Charley] I feel... love that lasts forever
[All] I have a friend--I have a friend
I have a friend--I have a friend
