Story behind the song
In looking into my ancestry, I came across cases where even though family closeness was very important, members of my family had to be separated for long periods to provide for the family. Often the story of the immigrant is one of leaving the homeland to work on a future that may or may not ever come to be realized. The sacrifice of separation is not uncommon even at this time. Often an expression of love means only knowing that love lives at a distance and may not be savored in any other realm but that of the mind.
Lyrics
Glory, this letter sent from so far, I hope that it lands in your tender hands. Glory, I love you. You know in your heart, I am so lost without you. The work is hard and the days are long, But someone has to provide. It’s a common story, when times are so hard, Of a man, his wife and a child. When the evening sky opens to me, I look to the star that you might be. Your face shines bright; it defies the night. You fire the yearning in me. I send you the money. I send you my words, But somehow you’ll have to abide. The loneliness lingers when we should be together As a man, his wife and a child. When I am able, I vow to return. If your arms are open and the home fires burn. If your face shines bright like a guiding light To fulfill a dream I have earned. Until that day, all will just be A plan, a hope of Glory for me, And the kiss of a child, innocence in her smile. Glory, I love you. Please love me.
