lamentations for a lost kingdom
The tune started as a way to entertain the neighbor's kid: "There's a little girl standing on my porch, and Stephanie is her name. She says when I sing it annoys her, but I keep on singing just the same." It somehow morphed into reflections of a jester in search of a king.
Jester’s Tear
Whatever happened to the land of castles?
Whatever happened to the prince in white?
Whatever happened to the peasant’s daughter
Was she swept up on his steed in the night?
Whatever happened to the grassy hillside
Where lovers live their simple life of bliss?
How long has freedom served that tyrant dollar?
How have we come to this?
(chorus)
Oh people can you hear the jester crying?
For the land without a throne is run by fear
All the hopes and dreams of little ones are dying
Oh people can you hear the jester’s tear?
Whatever happened to the horse and carriage?
And what will happen to the blue of the sky?
If we don't learn that as we’re burning her fossils
We are condemning mother earth to die?
Whatever happened to the quest for justice?
What of the pure one who washed other men’s feet?
Are we so busy we just brush him off
When he’s alone and hungry in the street?
(chorus)
Oh people can hear the jester crying?
For the land without a throne is run by fear
All the hopes and dreams of innocents are dying
Oh people can you hear the jester’s tear?
(repeat)
Oh people can hear the jester crying?
For the land without a throne is run by fear
All the hopes and dreams of innocence are dying (in your eyes)
Oh people can you hear the jester’s tear?
Oh people can you hear the jester’s tear?
