Story behind the song
The best-known version was recorded by The Everly Brothers, and released by Cadence Records as catalog number 1350. This version was issued as the flip side of "Bird Dog," but reached the charts on its own, at #10 on the United States pop charts, #25 in Australia, and #1 in Canada. In addition, the song reached #7 on the United States country music chart and #2 on the rhythm and blues chart. It was also recorded by James Taylor and Carly Simon, appearing on Simon's 1978 album, Boys in the Trees. The song was also covered live by The Seekers on their 1993 25 Year Reunion Celebration album. The Beach Boys version was a part of their Beach Boys' Party! album and was sung by Mike Love and Brian Wilson. A version without the Party! sound effects can be found on their Hawthorne, CA compilation. Sandy Posey recorded a compelling cover on her Sweet Dreams album in which she emulated The Everly Brothers harmony using multi-track recording.
Lyrics
Darlin’ you can count on me Till the sun dries up the sea Until then I’ll always be devoted to you I’ll be yours through endless time I’ll adore your charms sublime Guess by now you know that I’m devoted to you I’ll never hurt you, I’ll never lie I’ll never be untrue I’ll never give you reason to cry I’d be unhappy if you were blue Through the years my love will grow Like a river it will flow It can’t die because I’m so devoted to you I’ll never hurt you, I’ll never lie I’ll never be untrue I’ll never give you reason to cry I’d be unhappy if you were blue Through the years my love will grow Like a river it will flow It can’t die because I’m so devoted to you
