Celebrating the energy, defiance and the great potential of being young.
I imagined what I'd say to a group of graduating high school seniors.
(Judging by my poor academic background, I doubt that I'll ever be invited to do this---so I wrote a song instead!!!)
You’re Only Young Once
They can’t relate to what you say and do
And they can’t feel what you’re going through
But now’s your time for dreaming
And reaching for the stars
For dancing and for dating
And driving your first car
‘Cause you’re only young once
And that’s all you need to know
Yeah, you’re only young once
You’ve got lots of time to grow
There are those who long ago enjoyed
Their moment in the sun
Who’d love to have your freedom
And take away your fun
But you’re only young once
There’s a big world to explore
Yeah, you’re only young once
And your life’s an open door
And you’re only young once!
Their days of glory now are gone
But yours are coming from now on
Your future is as limitless
As the wide expanse of space
So, don’t settle for too little
When you’re destined for first place
‘Cause you’re only young once
And the prize is yours to take
Yeah, you’re only young once
You’ve got history to make
Don’t let them underestimate
The great things you can do
Remind them that they had their chance
And now it’s up to you
‘Cause you’re only young once!!!
