Mr Downstairs
Everything comes to an end. That time has arrived for the band Mr.Downstairs.
After six years of pushing boundaries, buttons and physical limits, Mr.Downstairs came to an end in October 2003 with the departure of founding guitarist Anthony Cacciotti. Realizing that a new guitarist would mean the end of Mr.Downstairs in any case, remaining members Brian Bessire, Dan Henderson and new bassist Mike Foster also decided to move on.
But the story doesn't end there. Before going their own ways, Brian, Dan and Mike decided to complete the songs that Mr.Downstairs was currently writing, and release them. Twelve songs, spanning a period of expansion and experimentation, were chosen. Some were already recorded. Others hadn't been started. Appropriately titled, "be all end all" is a glimpse of everything Mr.Downstairs might have been, had things turned out differently.
In Anthony's unfortunate departure, the integrity of Mr.Downstairs had escaped unscathed. Instead of compromising their songs to fit the most marketable format, Mr.Downstairs was able to release all of the songs they felt were good enough to share with their fans and friends. They always gave their fans more credit than music industry executives, who seemed to believe that the average listener can only tolerate so much from one band. The members of Mr.Downstairs realized that their favorite bands were the ones that transcended trends and boundaries, forged their own direction and chose their own destiny. And in their last moments, Mr.Downstairs chose to do just that.
Be all. End all.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Mr.Downstairs was formed in 1997, and after a few personnel changes the members consisted of Anthony Cacciotti on guitar, Brian Bessire on vocals and backup guitar, Dan Henderson on drums and Aaron Woodard on bass guitar. They built up a following from their explosive live shows and their unique playing style. In 2000 Mr.Downstairs released their full-length Self-Titled CD, and their songs OVERTURNED and MINDLESS became underground favorites. While they toured regionally for some time, Mr.Downstairs began to diversify their sound away from their hardcore roots and into a progressive hard rock direction. In 2002 their 3-song EP PRECONCEPTION was released, with songs like OPERATION RESCUE showing their evolution with more refined production, and the intentional lack of full-on screaming.
By this time, internal struggles had manifested themselves into a petrifying lack of progress. Anthony, Brian and Dan had been moving in the same musical direction, and Aaron away. In September 2002, Aaron parted ways with Mr.Downstairs.
The band took this as an opportunity to throw off all of their boundaries and write whatever inspired them. Temporarily putting off finding a new bass player, Mr.Downstairs wrote a dozen new songs through the winter of 2003. A new website was also begun by Zanzinato. By May the band was on the search for a bass player, and in September Mike Foster became the fourth member of Mr.Downstairs.
Continuing to write and record song demos, Mr.Downstairs then prepared to narrow their musical scope and play their first live show in fourteen months. But just as plans were moving into action, Anthony unexpectedly left the band. Caught off-guard, and after experiencing the long down-time without a bass player, the remaining members decided not to continue.
Before disbanding, Brian, Dan and Mike decided to finish the songs they had written and release them to the public. Freed from narrowing their scope to make themselves more marketable, the band maintained their wide scope of musicianship and utilized their considerable home studio skills to fulfill the full potential of their music. In an odd turn of events, the dissolution of the Mr.Downstairs was the inspiration needed to fulfill its musical potential.
On June 1st,2004, Mr.Downstairs' final CD 'be all end all' was released. Produced from start to finish completely by the band, and incorporating a meticulously constructed emotional rollercoasters, 'be all end all' represented the exclamation point on the band's seven year history. Eleven days later, after a small CD release party in the very apartment that brought their CD to life, Mr.Downstairs came to an end.
