Mountain Consolidated

Funky breakbeats meet up with Lo-Fi country-soaked Folk-Rock to create what some people have started to call "Strum and Bass." Imagine If Jon Spencer and Beck sang "Pretty Fly For a White Guy." With soulful lyrics, social conscious and an unconventional delivery, James Nugent is a folk singer the way Lou Reed is a folk singer. A self declared "urban hick" Nugent proclaims his musical collective, Mountain Consolidated "the most groovin' country western band ever". Aptly titled The Highpoint Project, Mountain Consolidated's demo CD, is an autobiographical chronicle of their migration from Missoula, MT to the Highpoint projects of West Seattle. The transition to an urban setting had a profound effect on the band personally, as well as the musical direction the project would take. "We used to be white trash," muses bassist Ferguson on the bands social and musical development, "now we're just trash". The sentiment is apparent on such standout tracks as, After the Goldrush 9 and Surrounded by Midnight Singing the White Boy Blues. Blending a background in roots music with two turntables, an irrefutable groove, and a smart sense of humor, the band has created a catchy, hard to define, style all their own. They bring truth to the overused term "musical hybrid". Currently Mountain Consolidated is touring and playing shows regionally. Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Beginning as a trio, Nugent, bassist Pierre Ferguson and resident keeper of the beat, drummer Mike Watt, soon realized they would need co-conspirators to complete their shared musical vision. Calling on former band mate Eric Swede, a slide and steel guitar player, Mountain Consolidated developed their twang factor. Fellow audio head Erik Blood' s samples, loops and turntables complemented Ferguson's "down home funk" bass styling and set the basis for what has become the band' s trademark honky groove. With the addition of Ben Erickson an organ player with a background in film, "scoring" the project, Mountain Consolidated cemented their formula.
