Magical moments. Extemporaneous improvisations around the hearts and sounds of the people. A blend of smells and colours from Europe through american jazz tradition up to east Africa. Free notes flow in the veins of the plant as far as to THE NEW FLOWER is born!
Band/artist history
This album idea born when I lived for 3 months long in Ethiopia. My piano style has been very strongly influenced by ethiopian people music culture. Fastly, like a kind of magic, all my studies about jazz piano and the rest of my musical background woke up and I realised my first growing step in piano solo.
Anything else?
Travels are a great source of inspiration: in visual arts painters like Van Gogh and Gaugin made their pictures close to the mood and coulours of their living places; Goethe from his trip to Italy produced a very famous set of letters and the great saxophone player John Coltrane after several tours to Far East embraced not only other religions but also new musical cultures like the indian one. WILD FLOWER is a tribute to Mama Africa from the pianist Michele Giuliani. His piano melodies are a very strong appeal to the african open spaces and wildness that represented a kind of breaking point in his spiritual and musical background. WILD FLOWER is also the result of the different artistic influences from piano players like Mal Waldron and Keith Jarrett mixed in a very unique sound which recall to the traditional jazz themes but also to the stories played by Jarrett in his incredible piano solo improvisations of the seventies. In this work jazz roots are heard on two traditional songs like LUSH LIFE and SUMMERTIME while the rest of tunes are composed and arranged from Michele Giuliani, who already experienced as a band-leader in his last recordings, which were not properly jazz ones. One the most interesting features of this eclectic young pianist is the peculiarity of his musical background concerned also with progressive rock and soul-funky which give evidence of an artistic profile in constant progress. WILD FLOWER is the first Michele Giulianis piano solo experiment and also a milestone in his young and brilliant carrier.
