How To Choose A Good Producer In Atlanta
Feb 12, 2013
Choosing a professional, proficient and talented producer in Atlanta can be a very arduous task. This is especially true when there are so many worthwhile producers to choose from as can be found in most major cities these days. This is even more so true in cities where the music scene is prominent in a certain genre such as Atlanta, L.A, Nashville and New York. Constantly, I get calls from people new to the music business wanting to know how they can choose a good producer in the town or city in which they live. This task can be difficult in any city but in a musically inclined city like Atlanta where there is a whole scene from which our producers come it can seem impossible. There are far too many audio engineers and producers in a place like Atlanta or New York to comfortably choose from unless you know what to look for, so I decided to summarize some steps you can take to help you with this task. Just so you can understand my own history, I was born in Monterrey, Mexico; but I was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I've lived in Atlanta for thirteen years; and over that time I've noticed a steady growth in population. A growing and impressively diverse Hip Hop scene has laid out a pathway for Atlanta to continue to be a Mecca of sorts for lovers of music, music performers and music producers for a long time to come. I say that for obvious reasons. Artists too are moving here in droves; and with the steadily growing number of artists, producer numbers have skyrocketed the last ten years. Because of this, knowing how to choose a reputable and proficient production is even more important. There are many scammers out there who are only interested in a quick buck. Some will use quick program software to mix and master songs which pales in comparison to a real engineer. That's a big risk to take especially when you're dealing with hard earned money. I hope this helps you choose the right path for your journey to success. 1. Online Presence ---Free Ad Sites: Yellowpages.com, Yelp.com I mentioned YP and Yelp specifically because they provide a free service where small business owners can post ads. It would speak well of the producer you're researching to have at the minimum a YP and/or Yelp ad. Signing up for free advertising across a broad base of sites takes effort; but if the producer or audio engineer you're interested in has not at least put in that effort of marketing himself, you should then question how much effort he or she would put into your projects. ---Intermediary & Third Party Sites: Soundclick.com,YouTube.com Professional producers constantly work to keep their level of proficiency up. And so like any group of professionals, proficient producers tend to interact with others in their industry and people of like minds. So it's important for that producer to have a way for other musically minded people to engage him where he can constantly learn and grow as a professional. Making sure the producer is active in social media sites, video and music sharing sites and intermediary sites where producers interact in forums and collaborate with each other, is important. This tells you he's a producer who is constantly wanting to keep up with the new sounds coming out from his contemporaries. Him engaging his fans on Facebook, twitter and LinkedIn is a good way to tell this person is easily accessible and open minded to critiques from the public. Does your producer have a facebook fan page where potential clients and fans can hear his past projects? Is he making content such as YouTube videos where he engages clients about his theories on music and future projects? This signifies a person who is laying the ground work to work with others in his field, and can show someone whose reach in his industry is such that he can be valuable to reaching your goals.
