I have been playing music for more than 35 years, and that’s a long time playing music. I have basically been playing small bars and taverns on the road, which makes that 35 years feel like a whole hell of a lot longer upon reflection. I suppose that I’m one of those musicians who been blessed and cursed with the need to ramble and attempt to make that into a meaningful musical profession. I have encountered a lot of characters, and I have been a part their stories, and they’re a part of mine.
I met some great people, some famous and some infamous. I made my way through San Francisco during the 1960s, I traveled up and down the West Coast, woke up with my fair share of headaches and hangovers, played in places that don’t even exist anymore, but all those stories remain; and that’s what came to inspire a good part of this album. I remember a quote by Woody Guthrie that struck a chord in me about having the need to inject yourself into the lifeblood of the people, there’s more to that quote, but I want to find it again to make sure I have his words correct for the quote.
