Carey Kalen
Aug 9, 2008
Right from a young age, music played a central role in Carey's life. She was a dancer from the age of three and a piano player since the age of six. Although Carey did not begin to sing professionally until her teenage years, she knew from a young age that she loved the role in the spot light. Throughout elementary school Carey continued to learn different styles of dance and appreciate different types of music. As Carey developed an appreciation for music, her idol became singing sensation Mariah Carey. "The first time I heard her sing it changed music for me forever. Listening to the passion in her voice and the emotion in her music made me want to become a singer. I only hope that I can impact someone with my music the way that she did for me". At the age of 15 when Carey reached high school, she joined her high school choir, and won the spot of all the school solos. It was then that Carey realized her potential for her talent and decided to dedicate her self to pursuing a career in music. She knew that her dream was to one day become a recording artist. She started to write her own songs and train her voice professionally. After high school she began singing in an all girl vocal trio, Toshi Jackson and the Silhouettes, where she performed a mix of Motown and classic R&B cover songs from the 50's to the 90's. Carey and the girls performed all throughout Alberta at a variety of venues, from corporate functions to restaurants and casinos. It was then that Carey fell in love with being on stage, and interacting with an audience. "Being on stage reassured me that this is what I am meant to do. It gives me a great rush of energy when I see my audience smile and sing along". This furthered Carey's drive to become a recording artist. While working on her music, Carey attended the University of Calgary, studying nursing. She loves helping people, whether it be touching people's hearts through her music or caring for them as a nurse. While attending university, Carey worked numerous part-time jobs to help pay for school. Through one of her jobs working as a waitress she was given the chance to venture out on her own as a solo artist. She began singing in the lounge of the restaurant the she worked at on the weekends. "This was a big step for me. When I sang in a group I didn’t get any say in wardrobe, music or choreography, this gave me an opportunity to be creative and learn how to direct my own shows". Through this opportunity she met producer Graeme Judd and began working with him writing and recording her original material. "I love being in a recording studio. I had so much fun learning about the music industry". While working with Graeme, Carey gained experience with many types of vocal recording including custom Intro's for Calgary's Hit Radio Station Vibe 98.5, and Jingles for local companies. After that, Carey began working with EQJ studios and a variety of independent producers to finish her debut album, and is currently performing at local venues around Calgary. Carey is excited to break into the music industry with her debut album as a solo R&B/Pop recording artist.
