A singer/songwriter, Butch was born in Huntington, Wv.
From a large family, dirt poor, they lived in Gimlet Hollow on the side of a hill in a house owned by his great grandmother. Throughout his school years his mother was left to try and feed 7 children which were abandoned most of the time by their father who was a WWII Vet with an alcohol problem. With no electricity, no running water, and no indoor plumbing, about all they had for entertainment was their Mothers guitar. She taught most of the children to play.
They sang harmony together and attended a Pentecostal Church which helped feed and clothe them. The older ones of the family helped with the family income.
Butch, singing in church by the age of 6, learned to play guitar at the age of 8. A very strict religion, they weren't allowed to play anything but gospel, "No 'Ditties' played in my house"
But Mom taught him well and he would sneak and play R & R on the 1943 Parlor (Baby) Martin guitar bought by his Mom for $5. Butch still has the guitar, one of his prized possessions.
Butch played music in local bands until 2001, with some very succesful tours and venues. His talents were singing lead and harmony, playing rythymn guitar and some leads. The music spanned from R & R to Motown to Southern Rock & Country.
These days, retired, his love of music, hard times, and good times inspires writing songs that are heartfelt, and mostly true, with a few embellishments.
He is The Storyteller.
My Music
Butch thank you for your comments about our images and I appreciate that very much. Your music is inspiring and very well written not to say how well it is performed. Love songs with a good story line and things that have happened in life. Like photography it is a way to record history for the future generation. Those old photos on your page are just fabulous. You are certainly professional in all your music and sing from the heart. I wish you a lot of success for the future and I certainly will be back to listen more. Thank you for your music and good luck Bucky Perth Western Australia gremar1@bigpond.com.au www.gremarimage.com
