Monday, 01 August 2011 06:13 1) Jody Ask * What do you want the world & your countless fans to know about you as a man or a woman and you the artist ? ( bit of history, about your cd, influences, who you've open for, likes & dislikes (could be anything exp. perhaps you like ppl to be honest, upfront, know that you got that person support 100 %)(hobbies) perhaps some advice or insight to fellow artists. ) My name is Stan Cox, I am from Marietta, Oklahoma. I am married to my soul mate, LaDanna, and we just celebrated 32 years together, and we have over 15 children. I say OVER 15, because we have been Foster Parents for years, and even the children that the Government hasn't declared are ours legally, are still ours in our hearts. Breaking it down, we have 5 birth children, and 10 adopted kids, +7. I started playing guitar, and bass guitar, at a early age and by the time I was almost 8 years old I was playing music on a local radio station, doing the Sunday morning Gospel show with my Dad and his Friend. In the early 80's, LaDanna and I, got talked into going to a jam session with my sister and her boyfriend, at a little hole in the wall place in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and I was invited up on stage. I grabbed the bass and spent about an hour enjoying a knocked out band, sang a few songs, and that jam was to change my life. The next day I received a phone call from the club owner that he wanted to 'talk'. My meeting with him ended with me signing up as the bandleader, and building the band as I saw fit. He was in the process of constructing a dance hall/concert center, and I played at Emmett's Oasis for the next 6 years. There I opened for some awesome acts that included Johnny Bush, Jerry Reed, Johnny Paycheck, Marty Haggard, Hank Thompson, & Faron Young. I was hired to play bass for a couple of local shows that Johnny Bush did in our area, and played bass for a local show for Hank Thompson. Hank tried to hire my steel guitar player, but, he ended up sticking with me, ha, I'd like to think because of my talents, but truthfully, it was his family obligations that kept him there. I was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor in 1990, and was told before surgery that I would come out a quadrapalegic, but the Lord was looking out for me, and the tumor and cancer was removed, and after 4 surgery's, I spent the next few years learning to walk and function again. In 1992, I went back to playing music on a full time basis, and luckily I had that talent to fall back on, because my life of hard labor was over. 2nd) Any embarrassing moment in your music career ? : ) Oh plenty of embarrassing moments, but you just pick up and go on, hoping no one remembers them, lol. 3rd) Any Awards ? As far as awards go, LaDanna and I won a couple of songwriting competitions for Kentucky Fried Chicken..only on the local basis..two years in a row, we had the 1st place song, and I think we won a fancy cassette recorder one year, and I don't remember what the other one was. But we got a lot of radio exposure with our songs, that were just entered with acoustic guitar and me singing, and it drove a lot of customers to the place I was playing music. 4th) Do you feel that the internet & online promoting is helping your music career ? The internet has been a great tool for getting some focus on the Indie Artist. I am daily shocked at how many people from across the world that I have been able to share music and friendship with. I met Gary Bradshaw, of Western Heart Promotions on the internet, and between him and Songwriter/Promoter Lonnie Ratliff, they convinced me to 'cut' a album and give it a shot at promotion. I've had a couple of songs to make it to several charts, one of the most successful so far being "Hard Rain Comin' Down", writt

(bit of history, about your cd, influences, who you've open for, likes & dislikes (could be anything exp. perhaps you like ppl to be honest, upfront, know that you got that person support 100 %)(hobbies) perhaps some advice or insight to fellow artists. ) Yeah, people always want to know that stuff. I’m 61, married, daughter just graduated from college (and got married), live on the Oregon Coast where it rains a lot. Been playing guitar over 35 years, and writing for almost that long. Played rhythm guitar with the Dodson Drifters, back when that “bluegrass punk” band was famous. One British writers’ group I signed up with wanted me to describe what I do in one sentence, and I told them, “Happy, upbeat, uptempo songs about death, lost love, betrayal, religion, and dead animals.” Still sums it up pretty good. New album out, with Deathgrass, the band I play with—Dead Things in the Shower. Mostly my stuff (two co-writes and nine originals). Previous album, Santa’s Fallen and He Can’t Get Up, is still selling some. I have worked as a city manager last 17 years; currently unemployed, like everybody else. Advice? I want to get advice, not give it. I’m not successful yet, by any means. For writers, I’d pass on the mantra from Bill Shakespeare: “Keep your eyes and ears open; remember the world is a very strange place, and people are very weird critters.” (No, he didn’t sasy it precisely like that.) For performers: “If you act like you know what you’re doing, people will believe you do.” 2nd) Any embarrassing moment in your music career ? : ) One. First time I played “Bluebird on My Windshield” at a concert, my wife was in the audience—and she walked out. These days, I make sure to introduce it with “My wife says I need to emphasize this song is Not. About. Her.” 3rd) Any Awards? A couple. One of my songs, “Duct Tape,” took second place at the Oregon State Fair in 2005. “Prehistoric Roadkill” won top prize at the song contest at the Wheeler County Bluegrass Festival in 2007. And “No Good Songs About the War” (which is on the Deathgrass album) won first prize in a “Can you write like Dylan?” contest in England in 2009. (And I still have the “cheque” for 100 British pounds nobody’s willing to cash.) 4th) Do you feel that the internet & online promoting is helping your music career? I promote anywhere and anyhow I can; that helps the career. The Internet is a great promotional tool—it allows one to reach a wide audience without respect to distance. One still has the perennial problem of getting people to listen. 5th) Anything major coming up for you like a tour, a new album? No—it’s done for this year. Right now, it’s Concert Season, and I’m playing somewhere every weekend (and of course, promoting the album, which came out this spring). 6th) Are you looking for any sponsors if so what would you like them to know "Why they should sponsor you?" I hadn’t thought about that. Sponsorship is probably a good idea. Years ago, people used to invest in the careers of writers and artists they thought could Go Somewhere; I don’t see it happening much any more, and maybe it should. All I can say with respect to myself is the material I write appears to be entertaining; people like it, people request it, and people buy records with it on it—even with me singing it. Couple my stuff with somebody who could sing, and play guitar good, and you might really have something. Any takers? Songwriters/Artists 7) With the decrease in big record companies and the increase of artists to go the do it yourself or independent route, how has this affected the way you get your
