I'd never seen the Boss in concert before, so I was excited to catch his show on his hometurf. You hear so many good things about him as a live performer. The show was supposed to start at 7:30. There was nothing, no warm-up band or similar until he entered the stage at 8:45. That's just not a good way to start a show in my book. Anyway, when he entered the stage the crowd was immediately into it. The show was good, but maybe my expectations were a bit high. He just played his set like any other show and the set list as well as the musical arrangements offered little variety, it was more or less the same sound throughout the night. He played a couple of "older" cover songs and even closed the show with a 15 min version of "Twist and Shout", but left out own classics such as "Born in the USA". So, in a nutshell, we had fun, the concert was good, but I don't see myself rushing to see him live again.
Yesterday I saw a gig by Argentine's own Coral at Joey's Pub in NYC. The theme of the evening was "Don't cry for me Argentina" and featured 2 bands from there, Coral and Contramano. SoundClick's own Phil used to play guitar for Coral so we had to catch this gig. Unfortunately Phil did not play guitar last night, but it was a great show nevertheless. Coral plays a sort of relaxed pop and writes her own material. The songs are great and Coral's voice completes it very well. Definitely recommended!
Wow, what a game! Finally a game where Germany actually dominated, and that against Portugal, a very strong contender! There was no doubt that Germany will prevail, but what a show. The whole team was much better than before, the change from the static 4:4:2 to a more modern 4:3:2:1 really paid off. Schweinsteiger was superb! I'm really looking forward to next game next Wed! Woohooo, semi-finale!!!
Last night I saw a better-than-expected show by the Ting Tings at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. The UK duo is best known for their hit "Shut up and let me go" which is featured in the Apple commercial. They opened with an amazing version of "We walk", immediately followed by "Great DJ". I was surprised to get 2 of the strongest songs of the album right at the beginning, but it worked just fine. Even songs which sound just ok on the album such as "Keep your head" had real fire live and the band delivered them just great. Lots of music parts such as keyboard and bass came completely from tape, but it sounded very much like the real deal. All songs came in different-from-the-album versions and the backup parts seem to be pre-recorded live sets. At least they sounded like a full set live band :) Of course hits like "Shut up and let me go" turned the Bowery ballroom into a frenzy. At one point during "Shut up" the song song turned almost completely percusion. The singer Katie grabbed a cowbell and started banging. Immediately a couple of people around me recited a line from the famous SNL sketch with Christopher Walken: "Guys, I need more cowbells!". The song version was, like most of the show, full of energy. The concert was surprisingly short (about 45 minutes), but I prefer a great 45 min show over a drawn-out 90 min show every day.
