For serious artists only
Oct 30, 2009
Hello fellow artist/producers
I am posting this b/c I've had to explain this several times to personal artists
I know as well as new artist/producers I've met with little knowledge on getting
started. This is a reply I sent to an artist, but I hope you find it informative
as well.
If you want to pursue music seriously the first thing you have
to do is register with ASCAP or BMI. I never researched BMI, but I
have an ASCAP membership. They will say you can be (Artist Name) as an
artist, producer. If someone already is registered as (Artist Name) you
may have to change your name b/c a check cant have the same name for two different
people. Secone these Performance Rights Organizations(PRO) are who
pay you off of performances(radio, television, shows) as well as other
benefits when you register. You have to research yourself b/c they do
alot as well as represent you if someone steals your music. Simply put
you dont get paid CORRECTLY if you are not with one. www.ASCAP.com and
www. BMI.com are the links. Every artist belongs to one. Once you
register with a PRO next register your songs with the copyright
office. www.loc.gov and go to the copyright office link. Once you
register with the copyright office you can then register your song
titles with ASCAP. Understand your music is copywritten at the moment
you create it but this allows you do enforce penalties on someone who
steals your music as well as establishes you as a true artist. ASCAP
costs $25 for each membership( songwriter/composer and $25 for
publisher, $50total). As far as copyrighting there are different
considerations with each situation but if you own the music or lyrics
you can submit multiple works under one project title for $35( the online upload fee).
Im a producer so I submitted tracks and not lyrics. Anyway I'm sorry the message
is so long, but it must be stated. If you have any questions you can contact
me and I'll tell you what I know. If you have a myspace account add me
Myspace.com/theofficialleaf. Soon I will be posting links and info to
help Independent Musicians.

At this time I would like to give a special shout out to the Hydroponics for coming through on that "70's" Instrumental and the " I Came, I Saw" Instrumental which I will be posting very soon. I truly could not have done it without you.
