Worship Team Dynamics Part 1
Aug 11, 2008
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to a work in progress! Over the next several blogs we’ll discuss Worship Team Dynamics. The HEART & the ART of what we do as worship leaders & church musicians. The goal is to present the practical side of worship ministry as we seek to take our worship teams to a new level of excellence and effectiveness for the Kingdom of God. Your feedback & thoughts along the way will be greatly appreciated!
Worshipfully,
Steve
Worship Team Dynamics
Pt 1. The “HEART” of the Matter!
Any exploration of worship team dynamics must begin with the recognition that there are two distinct dimensions to be considered, the spiritual & the musical. Let’s define these as, the HEART and the ART of the matter. There’s no question that the priority in worship ministry lies with the heart. If the heart of the worship leader or team is filled with wrong motives (sin), then the art quickly becomes a non-issue. However, if the heart is right, then the art becomes essential to the establishment a spiritual climate attractive to the Holy Spirit of God. Remember, it was a “sound” that announced the arrival of the Holy Spirit on the day of pentacost! Another of my favorite passages of scripture regarding music and the prophetic anointing is found in 2 Kings 3:10-15
So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom, and they marched on that roundabout route seven days; and there was no water for the army, nor for the animals that followed them. 10 And the king of Israel said, “Alas! For the LORD has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
11 But Jehoshaphat said, “Is there no prophet of the LORD here, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?”
So one of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said, “Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.”
12 And Jehoshaphat said, “The word of the LORD is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Then Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.”
But the king of Israel said to him, “No, for the LORD has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
14 And Elisha said, “As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you, nor see you. 15 But now bring me a musician.”
Then it happened, when the musician played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.
This workshop starts, ever cautiously, with the assumption that the overall heart of your worship leadership is healthy and that regular attention is given to the spiritual growth and the increasing Christ-likeness of your team members.
Think About it…
1. How would you rate the overall spiritual health of your team?
2. What spiritual disciplines do you have in place that will help assure your on-going spiritual growth?
3. In what ways do you think that your team may need to grow spiritually?
4. In regards to your team, do you see yourself as a spiritual pacesetter, a spiritual weak link, or somewhere in between? How do you think your teammates see you?
To be contiued in Part 2
