EMI To Slash One-Third Of Its Staff In Restructuring Plan Published: Monday - January 14, 2008 Words by Allen Starbury Record label, EMI, is expected to announce Monday (January 14) that it will cut its staff as the music industry continues to struggle with declining sales. EMI — which was bought by private equity firm Terra Firma in 2007 — will be restructuring, laying off a third of its 6,000 employee staff, slashing its marketing costs and dropping some of their artists reports the Wall Street Journal. The label will cut back on its recorded music operation — which doesn’t include music publishing — and plan to digitize its massive music catalog which includes Norah Jones and the Beatles. “Digital music sales are still not able to make up for the decline in CD sales, so cutting costs is imperative at most music companies,” Mark Mulligan, a London-based analyst at Jupiter Research, told Bloomberg.com on Monday. “EMI still has a rather complex and inefficient structure, so Guy Hands (CEO of Terra Firma) should be able to slash quite a few jobs.” The layoffs follow the December layoffs at Geffen and Interscope Records, which left as many as 60 employees jobless right before Christmas. Some of the artists signed, or previously signed, to EMI include Pink Floyd, The Spice Girls, Diana Ross, Da Gorillaz and Tina Turner. Source: https://www.ballerstatus.com/article/news/2008/01/3884/
