Form over substance.

Hey everyone. Happy 2008
I have been thinking about the future of guitar and where we are now. Where the hell are we? It's obvious that Metal and guitar oriented rock are coming back but the days of the shredder are gone. Will they come back? Do we want them to come back. I love listening to some Paul Gilbert or Yngwie Malmsteen but after a bit I need a rest.
On the other hand, Blues aint for everyone and just because you can pull off a few SRV licks doesn't make you a blues player. There are a lot of great blues players, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Bonnasama, top notch guys who have taken blues to a new level. But that only goes so far too.
Jazz?...Ok for a while. Scott Henderson is cool and sometimes it's a great listen when the mood is mellow.
Classical, well I studied for a few years in college and I am constantly amazed by players who totally commit to this. But again, it's a very limited audience.
Is there any place guitar can go or are we just going to reinvent the wheel. I don't know. Is there a place where instrumental guitar music will become commercially dominant or will we always be filling niches.
Just thinkin out loud. It's late and my mind is restless.
Remember, Rock and Roll does not take a vacation.
