16 years later, Melophobia, the "two man band with so much sound they can't play live" (althought they do) is converting music lovers world wide with their brand of Canadian pop.
Band/artist history
in the beginning:
'twas a brisk autumn day in september 1984 that the world changed forever. perhaps only the fates knew that day what was to come when a skinny, freckle faced boy made friends with a chubby little boy in a michael jackson t-shirt.
throughout the next few years, the pair enjoyed countless hours outside playing basketball, jumping on the trampoline and listening to things called cd's, mostly of popular artists such as young m.c. and maestro fresh wes.
their musical career bagan together when both decided to play trumpet in elementary school. soon thereafter mike, who had also been in choirs for years, took up drums and turned craig onto the notion of playing bass.
before there was melophobia...
in grade ten, mike released his very first album in a duo entitled contrast. the album was recorded on a 4-track in mike's basement and released on tape. it sold quite well, considering he was only 15. the next year mike released his second album, this time with a band called death of a zephyr. they recorded the album at acorn studios in salmon arm, b.c. canada on analog 8-track. this album was also released on tape and sold slightly better than the first. that same year mike finally started played in a band with craig who, by now, had also started playing guitar. the band was punningly called the spice boyz and played a few gigs around salmon arm performing some of their favourite tunes by such artists as radiohead, stone temple pilots and smashing pumpkins as well as a touching version of the spice girls number one hit wannabe. the following summer, now 1997, the boyz recorded an album of originals again at acorn, but unfortunately mike was moving to nelson for music school and the album was never released. a year later, craig purchased a roland vs-800 digital 8-track and rode nt-1 condenser mic and began working on a solo album. a few months later a 12 track, 60 minute cd entitled this is the space between your birth and death was released. this album sold about 100 copies and hinted at what was to come by featuring two standard melophobia songs: cast... and like paul and linda.
and then there was...
in the meantime, a year of business school convinced craig to join mike at music school in nelson. as soon as mike returned from the road, touring with a cover band called red sky morning, the pair found a house in nelson, assembled a home studio and began recording again. while attending school, they wrote and recorded ferociously, assembled more studio gear including the new vs-1680, and finally settled on a name for the project: melophobia.
the album:
after recording countless songs from august 1998 to january 1999, the duo finally settled on 15 tracks for the album, which they had now decided would be called strategic marketing, a pun on the calvin klein ad campains. they took a week off school, packed their gear into the car and headed for vancouver where they spent an entire week of 12+ hour days at utopia parkway studios getting the album professionally mixed by engineer John Shepp. once this feat was accomplished they had their album professionally mastered by craig waddell at gotham city studius. feeling opitimistic, they designed a 12 page full colour booklet for the cd and ordered 1000 copies. the album was released to the public on april 9, 1999 and, as for it's success, that is a story that is still in progress...
