This band was formed in the studio in Innisfail Alberta. We consist of Arvin on guitars and Electric Bass, Kirk on keyboards, Kent on drums, and Rick on Guitar, with Dixie singing backup. The band was more of a studio band, with no prospects for performing live. Despite that deficit, the song "shit flies" achieved international airplay, ironically beginning in Palermo, Italy, gradually making it onto the radio waves in North America, in such markets as New York City, New Jersey, Hamilton Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta, among others. The song also achieved a strong web presence on such websites as MP3.com, and Gay.com. The song still has a strong web presence, and can even be picked up on Japanese and Russian websites, which the members of the band had nothing to do with.
Band/artist history
The band is comprised of a bunch of studio musicians who all have day jobs. Arvin happens to also own a recording studio. We formed the group out of a need write songs, and then move on to bigger and better things. Aside from that, "Shit Flies" was actually written several years ago, and we finally got around to polishing it, and performing it. The band was more of a collection of bored studio musicians, than a performance entity. The debut song was inspired by a musician who had caused grief for other musicans in the local community, and the three co writers had common experiences with this particular gentleman, which evolved into "Shit Flies". It was not originally anticipated that the song would go anywhere. In fact, the origianal DAT tape was almost discarded, but Kirk, the keyboard player paid 50 bucks to have it remastered, and then it strangely took off. The band name was coined by Kirk who observed that all of the members of the "band" appeared to have some desire to allow mayhem into their lives. All involved parties agreed that the band name said something, and it stuck.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
All of the studio musicians involved have extensive live playing experience, but have never performed live as a unit. All of the musicians involved have gone onto their own independent projects. Arvin owns a recording studio. Kirk plays with Thoz Guyz, and Rick is lost in action. Kent continues with various bands in the Red Deer area, and still does studio work. Dixie, who sang backup, was not known to be a musician, but happened to be in the studio during recording, and provided her backing vocals and hand claps to the first track. The most special moment was the realization that our first effort actually achieved airplay, especially given the fact that we essentially did the project more for fun than anything. None of the involved musicians expected anything at all to come of the effort. It was a great surprise when we started receiving emails from radio stations advising us that we were getting airplay. The other special moment was the fun involved in simply writing and recording. We were all doubled over with laughter when we heard the final mix, and we hope our sense of humour arising out of our need to write about a particular person gets you, too.
Your musical influences
Our influences are fairly wide ranging. We have all done a lot of different material. We lean toward the classic rock sound, with some r&b, and some jazz as well.
What equipment do you use?
In this effort, we used normal electronic instruments and recording apparatus. On songs other than shit flies, Cakewalk was used to record. All instruments were played live by real musicians, except the sax on Shit Flies, which is a midi patch from a Kurzweil PC 88.
Anything else?
In marketing songs, We have all learned a lot about how difficult a task this is. It's extremely difficult to market a novelty song, and we've learned a lot about promoting ourselves. Anyway, enjoy!!!
