I am a pianist who also plays hurdy gurdy and I like to combine the two instruments (this is not possible on my own in real time!). Putting chordal piano music against droning gurdy melodies makes for an interesting combination, with or without the rhythmic buzz which has to be used with some care.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I often get my inspiration when out on my bike - like the hurdy gurdy, it relies on rotary movement. I usually practise gurdy in a closed room, but occasionally play out on the street. Live music plus novelty value. Sometimes people even dance, which is great to see.
What equipment do you use?
The piano (in the picture for the track 'Jamone') is a domestic Kawai, and I'm lucky enough to have two hurdy gurdies, both tuned to G-C. The brown lute-back gurdy was made by Neil Brook, and the black one is a Denis Siorat.
