Marina's Commentary on the state of Dance Music
By: Marina
Dance music, huh? Dance music! You like dance music? I LOVE dance
music, twenty-five years of dance music, finally got a category in the
Grammys. What happened?! Why such a low role call of submissions from
this community? Well most of dance musics so-called professionals found
every excuse in the world why not to participate. Whats the point? Who
cares? The DJs dont get to vote anyway!........ And on, and on...........EHH!!
(Buzzer) Stop!!! Thank you for playing (no pun intended). Guess what folks
the DJs are not the ones, for the most part, creating the music. There is
something called an artist. Well look I know, I know there isnt much artistry
happening in dance music these days you might say. Now, maybe thats
true. Well, possibly, thats because the real artists cant penetrate the
grotesque cycle that dance music now appears to be spinning (Ha! Ha!).
How many truly talented artists have slipped through the fingers of the elite
sleazy circle that envelops our dance music industry. How can characters
that appear to be directly spun out of a Scorcese movie hope to recognize
a brilliant writer? How can an office administrator, now A&R, hope to
recognize the talent and work it takes to be able to pick a song out of the
air, write it, sing it, breath life into it and then share it with an audience. No
way! Now the way I see it the record industry is about selling records, right?
Well honey, no record label these days is gonna get rich off selling vinyl.
Now unless these DJs and record labels get hip to that theyre just going to
shoot each other in the foot. Lets start again shall we?! Didnt we already
go through Milly/ Vanilly?? It starts with a song. Then its about the song and
whos delivering it. The marriage of the artist and the material. We,
especially in this country, are in an extremely visual age. Yet, why is a
culture, the dance culture especially, priding itself on "The cool factor, clubs
man.......", still in the dark ages. Get with it baby! Remember the power of
television, the power of the media in general. Remember MTV, VH-1.......,
lets see the song! Lets see the artist!!
Years ago we had performers! They made records in addition to
dancing, in addition to acting. It was called a triple threater folks! Amazing
that a form of music as visually and actively named as Dance music cannot
recognize the importance of bringing a great performer in front of the
public to sell the music. After all someone who has $15 to spend on one CD
in Boisey, Idaho has surely never heard of Junior V., or Danny T. Sadly
enough, theyve probably never heard of Gina G.. Have you?
This year an entertainer was brought back to the forefront again to
remind us of the power that a celebrity can hold. CHER FEVER! "Believe",
Sonny & Cher re-runs, a book, a movie, WOW! Im a believer! Cher at age
53 proves to those in the record business, that a truly talented artist is
ageless.
Help us dance community. We want our Chers, our Bettes, and our
Barbras! We want Liza with a Z! Patti LaBelle with a P! Where are the
performers?
Where are our dance artists?! When are the record labels going to
understand that artistry needs to be nurtured and paid for? After all dancing
for Grandma was expensive! Ballet twice a week, one day jazz, one day
tap. How else could an aspiring, performing, attention-suck acquire the skills
necessary in which to woo an audience. And we want to be wooed. Boy,
do we ever! We crave it, fantasize to it! "Give us what we want, what we
really, really want"! No, not the Spice Girls, not the Funky Green Dogs, not DJ
Company!! We want the real stuff! Someone who we think we know.
Someone who comes into our living rooms and explodes on the screen into
song and dance in one moment, and then can turn and deliver a tune that
wrenches the heart in another. Someone who represents the fashions and
the voice of our times. Someone controversial but caring, fantastic yet
human. Where are the stars? Where are our Judys, our Freds & Gingers,
our Michaels, even Madonna. Where are the dancers? Dance music, huh?
Dance music. You like dance music? I love dance music!!

MARINA - Bio
12-1-99
MARINA is a woman of the new millennium: powerful, beautiful, dynamic in
her roles as a top-charting dance music diva, acclaimed choreographer,
and mother of three. This artist/producer is also a classically trained
multi-instrumentalist (violin, keyboards, voice), professional dancer,
trend-setter, and co-owner (with her husband) of an 11,000 sq. ft
state-of-the-art TV/radio advertising production company in Midtown
Manhattan, Kamen Entertainment Group/MRK Records.
From famed director Cecil B. DeMilles lavishly-appointed former office
overlooking Times Square, MARINA and associate producer Tony Marinello
(previously with Bobby O -- best known for his work with the Pet Shop Boys
and Jellybean Benitez) are creating a high energy - world-friendly sound for
the radio of the fast approaching next century.
MARINA is a regular on the charts, with 7 singles under her belt. And now,
shes about to break out with her full length, all original, debut album "Um
Lotty Da".
This blonde, feline-ish pop-songstress is an exception amongst her peers.
She is not just a singer, not just a songwriter, not just a dancer, MARINA is a
successful mother and businesswoman who morphed from 200 pounds into
the dynamo she is today. Through fitness programs, weight control, and the
miracles of modern technology, MARINA is as fit today as she was at 20
when she spent her nights dancing at Studio 54 and CBGBs. "In a lot of
ways," she confesses, "the music I am creating today is reminiscent of the
driving beats and irresistible hooks of the best songs from that period."
Marina started dance at 4, added violin and piano at age 7, and then
went on to study opera and violin at the prestigious Manhattan School of
Music. She pursued a career as a singer/dancer/actress, supplementing her
income by teaching aerobics at Body Design By Gilda. She met her partner
for life, recording engineer Roy Kamen, at The Music House, a major
music/audio production studio in NYC. Soon the two launched their own
studio, Kamen Entertainment Group, Inc., which opened in 1987. Over the
years, MARINA has written, cast, and produced thousands of commercials,
often doing voiceovers and jingles for companies including Snickers Ice
Cream, Footlocker, Coty Stetson, Cherry Coke and VH1. This unique
opportunity allows MARINA to work with some of the best studio musicians,
singers, and actors that New York City has to offer. The best part is at the
end of the day; she goes home to her three beautiful children, ages 6, 8
and 13.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I love performing. And the bigger the better. I cast from the largest talent pool in the world - New York City's broadway dancers. I've performed at all of the areas largest clubs and have done quite a few large outdoor concerts. I also am airing a TV show on cable
Your musical influences
Annie lennox, Bette Midler, Cher, Barbera Streisand, Madonna
What equipment do you use?
We record with an extensive midi setup, ADAT, edit, mix and master in Protools
