Were in a game, go ahead and bend the rules. So proclaims Los Angeles based MANKIND LIBERATION FRONT on their debut release AUTOMIND, an extraordinarily collaborative effort that is the unlikely cohesion of three distinct talents. Their unique and multi-faceted approach to both songwriting and musical instrumentation proves once again that the sum must in fact be more than the total of its parts.
It was at the Berklee College Of Music where Herwig Maurer, Austrian techno wizard, met melody crusader Ran Pink, who had transferred from Boston University to pursue his truer calling. And, it was not long before these new-found co-conspirators would abandon the formality of their studies in Boston for a chance to merge their diverse and unconventional sensibilities in Los Angeles. It was there, amidst the tumult of the late-90s that MANKIND LIBERATION FRONT was born.
Tal Pink, Rans brother, while pursuing a law degree in England spent many late nights making do with an old sampler and a four-track. His eventual incorporation into the group seemed natural. Tal, after all, had contributed vocals on MLFs earliest recordings while Ran and Herwig were themselves taking an interest in Tals work.
Under the wing of Neutron/edel Entertainment, the trio has stayed faithful to the truth of their collective vision, We all sing, we all write, we all play instruments. Where each song begins as an individual effort, it is only through the unique effort of the groupwho do all of the recording in their living roomsthat these songs grow into their present form. The self-produced album represents their combined efforts to realize one anothers music.
Playing at musical genres like a mannequin in a costume shop, this home-spun record is to the future of indie-pop in the digital age what bathtub gin was to the roaring twenties. Altering notions of both the traditional rock band and the world of electronica, this anything but usual group demonstrates just where the lines are drawn between the likes of the Beatles and contemporaries like DJ Paul Oakenfold. AUTOMIND represents a spectacular collapsing of space between individual styles and a rupturing of traditional boundaries, altogether an advancement in the form of the popular song. Terms like industrial, pop, trip-hop and trance all become irrelevant, side by side, at times together, all of them literally in the mix. Even the most discrete ears will likely discover something new with each listen: airplanes, rain showers, creaking doors, the malibu surf
