The beginnings of a hardcore & straightedge rock band named MANDALA who sees the likes of Metallica, A Perfect Circle, Bad Religion, Shelter and more, as worshipable gods.
A good friend Mark was invited to play bass, while older brother Govi was on drums, and the younger brother played guitar and lead vocals. Recent additions are John on drums (with Govi switching to bass) and Pancha on rhythm guitars.
Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning circle, unity, completeness, wholeness. Wow. How profound can a hardcore rock band be? Well, the members have a deep liking to Eastern, Vedic philosophies, hence, their songs tend to talk about surrender to a Higher Being, spirituality and the environment, karma, the purpose of life, and of course, the all too typical yet unfathomable topic called love. Philosophical yet realistic, their distinctive songs reflect on personal experiences felt individually and collectively. All lyrics were written by Govinda, while music was composed by him and Hari Kirtan.
So, I, the writer of this profile, ask the members one by one, Whos your musical inspiration, your favorite band, your god?
Metallica, Sepultura, Steve Vai, Satriani and Petrucci Hari volunteers.
Me like Audioslave, Silverchair and Foo Fighters, John pipes in. Hes obviously the youngest of the group, as his musical influences derive from the late 90s to current rockstars.
Govi?
Definitely A Perfect Circle and Mozart.
Pancha? I like anything hardcore.
And you, Mark?
Anything alternative.
And so this band tends to deceive most listeners that theyre foreign or sound like it; that they sound like DreamTheatre mixed with Cromags, Bad Religion and Offspring. You cant put a finger on it, actually. They draw from so many musical inspirations and genres, and produce a mélange thats rock and punk to the very core.
Mandalas music is accompanied by syncopated drum grooves, and prolonged guitar ad libs. Mandalas music is like the melodic personification of a car crash grating, intense, striking.
Currently, the band is working on finalizing their debut album. The band also looks forward to performing in big events around the country.
