Band/artist history
Make Shift Manner first formed in February, 2005. Brothers Simon and Andrew, with friend Zac, approached Jason and asked him to join as a vocalist in their, at the time, un-named band. After playing playing punk covers for a while (Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys ect.) Andrew, Jason and Simon put together a handful of songs.
A friend of the band, Hannah, suggested the name Make Shift Manner (the original meaning and spelling has been forgotten by all members of the band).
Zac left MSM a short while later, after deciding that the original songs were not to his taste, and being unable to dedicate enough time to song write. He is still friends with the band (now a roadie).
So the three remaining members began their search for a new drummer. Over 4 months, they went though no less than 7 different drummers. Another mate, Cory (6 Months Later), offered to drum for them until they found a permanent drummer...
So along came the night of their first gig, and, at short notice, Cory informed Andrew, Jason and Simon that he was unable to get to the venue. His story: He had forgotten it was his birthday (after not beleiving him, Jason chased down some facts and found out that, yes, Cory had forgotten his own birthday). Sh*t! In a twist of fate, Matt was coming to the gig to help out local cover band Suffer for our Art. He offered his drumming services, and, after knowing the band for 5 minutes, and hearing some crappy demos Jason had laid down, drummed along perfectly.
Matt was made the drummer for the band that night.
With Matt now drumming for the band, the boys decided it was about bloody time that they recorded something as a band. All they had at the time was some (very dodgy) recordings that Jason had layed down in order to try to get some ideas out. So, they set up the BSC music room for recording, plugged the setup into the school's computer and managed to blow the 16 bit soundcard. Their second attempt to record something together (this time in a live situation) resulted in the overload of yet another computer (this time Jason's personal computer). Only 2 minutes of the 10 minute set survived.
Footage of Make Shift Manner does exist, somewhere. So far, the only useable live recording was taken from a video camera that was at Ballarock '05. But, much to the dissappointment of the band, the only part of the concert where the audio was good enough to use, was from One Voice, and the following encore jam. The video was too blurry, due to the lighting crew following the band's request of 'going bezerk'.
So, shortly after their second show, MSM decided to use the school's equiptment, this time into Jason's computer, and record their first CD, "We're Here". Production was done in spurts, due to the fact that they had to work around exams.
But, after a month of working on the CD, they saw light at the end of the tunnel. One Voice was completed, and the other songs on the disk were only one or two takes from being finished. With the CD only needing a few more hours of work, the band showed up to the school music room, keen to finally get it finished, only to recive devistating news. The week before, a shady character had broken into the music room and stolen equiptment. As a result, no band was aloud in the room unsupervised. Period.
So the boys were left with only one realistic option: Try to use the surviving footage from Ballarock, and their one completed song to get a gig, to save enough money to buy some equiptment to finish their CD.
Desperate to keep things moving, it was a case of "all hands on deck". Andrew and Simon immidently started talking to other local bands to try to get a support show, using whatever footage of the band they could get thier hands on (The One Voice recording, any surviving live footage, even footage from cameraphones), Jason used his abundance of spare time to gain some publicity, personally dropping One Voice around to local radio stations, and blitzing the internet to get a bit of a name. Matt used his time in Melbourne to get a name there, and offered moral support to the other three members (Matt was the only member of the band that was calm during this period, and probably did the wisest thing out of all the members; took a holiday).
The boy's efforts started to prove worthwhile. In November, One Voice made it to #4 on the Soundclick Alt Metal charts (with 957 plays and downloads in it's first week). They begain to see the band's logo graffitied around Ballarat, and recived very positive feedback. None of this was expected, with pats on the back came from total strangers on the street, the entire band sat looking at eachother nervously, with no idea what to expect next.
By this stage, Andrew and Jason had been sitting on an idea to hold a charity concert for their local theatre, Grainery Lane, which was in a state of turmoil.
Emma Fortescue (Mr Tarm'c) and Jess Lyle (Haunted Still) had a similar idea of holding a large event at Grainery Lane, and soon the two ideas murged together, and the idea for B'ratfest was born. Make Shift Manner, Mr Tarm'c, Haunted Still and Liberated lead the charge to hold the 11 hour long event, featuring 16 other bands.
B'ratfest managed to bring Grainery Lane out of debt, and saved the venue.
