Band/artist history
He says that he can remember hearing music as far back as in the womb. Actually that is not far fetched considering his father used to DJ local parties and his mom was an aspiring singer. LongAxe recalls his first run in with Hip-Hop music and says that it has driven him both mentally and spiritually ever since. Some of his influences include Rakim, Public Enemy, KRS1, Chill Rob G, A Tribe Called Quest and Big Daddy Kane. Back in those days Hip-Hop was a little more of a community so artist didn't beef over coasts or rumors, they kept the battles on wax. Before becoming a part of Tha Beggas in the early 90's Axe was like the rest of us; a fan of the most influential music of our time: HIP-HOP. He studied it, learned it, lived by it, grew with it and loved it. Axe was in several groups throughout high school and he even released a single called "Middle East" while in a group called Subject Matter in the early 90's. The single was pretty tight but didn't usher in any record deals. While still maintaining optimism he started to take his music a little more seriously and around that time he met Father Lord aka "Wu Chi". Lord was ahead of his time; he was one who could rhyme, DJ and produce and was the best at all three. Upon seeing this, Axe knew that he was home. This introduction to Lord sparked a relationship based on honor, respect, supreme intelligence, martial arts and music. Though it's hard to pinpoint the actual date of inception of Tha Beggas, there is no denying the creative forces it brought forth in such groups as Actual Facts & Black Lotus. With soloists like Ooh Aah and Jim Kelly the future was looking good. Long Axe was constantly surrounded by emcees, beat makers, and other such b-boy forces so his growth was constant and his passion for the music was growing. Things looked even better after the release of their single "Super Natural" (b/w "Iron Wire" & "Near Future". A buzz began to spread and shows followed but then tragedy struck and Father Lord was gone. He was killed in a fatal car "accident". The reason quotes are around the word accident is Father Lord's return came at the hands of a drunk driver and drinking and driving is no accident. Later on Tha Beggas would then do a song titled "On the Strength" (on Wu Tang's "The Swarm, Vol. 1") as a dedication to the spirit of Father Lord. This would be Tha Beggas last commercial release. For the past few years Long Axe has been going in many directions ranging from beat making to promotion and direction. The most interesting direction would be his lyrical direction. Although Axe has been influenced by some of the great Hip-Hop groups he has always been attracted to jazz, R&B, rock and other forms of music. These influences are why his music is a little eccentric to the ear of the traditionalist. Long Axe feels that if you are going to be apart of something as great as Hip-Hop then why not leave a piece of your identity within its genome? His subject matter ranges from political to humorous which is similar to real life. Sometimes you feel like Public Enemy number one and sometimes you just have to laugh at people because they think they know but they really, really don't know.
