La Gorda is an all-girl indie punk band whose music features a schizophrenic blend of dissonant yet melodic bass lines, contrasting vocal harmonization and lyrical topics ranging from witch burning to internet dating.
Band/artist history
Named after a Spanish phrase that loosely translates into "the fat girl", La Gorda began as a whimsical pastime between Dawn Perlas and Marcia Boyett in the Fall of 2001. Though neither girl had been in a serious band previously, it wasnt long before they hit on the rhythmic guitar riffs, melodic bass lines and contrasting vocals that would become La Gordas signature sound.
Amidst rotating drummers and auditioning lead guitarists, La Gorda released their demo in January 2003 and began earning their wings within the DC music scene. The duos perseverance was further rewarded with the arrival of drummer Christine Malash and guitarist Amber Turrill in 2004, who proved to be the ingredients needed to cement La Gordas sound: Christines intricate beats provide a strong yet flexible backbone to the bands changeable blend of indie-punk, where Marcias frenetic bass lines and scathing vocals are deftly offset by Dawns melodic voice and Ambers eclectic fretwork.
