Klez is an innovative electronica artist who has been composing music since 2002. He started out compiling his own tracks from bits of samples and other stuff he nicked from various sources. He eventually graduated to synths, drum machines, and the like, though he still loves a good butchered sample. His style varies depending on his mood, and he’s made stuff that falls into the categories of techno, ambient, orchestral, acid, and often just plain other. He is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, and currently resides in Ventura, California.
Band/artist history
I started making music in 2002 or so just tinkering with some basic sound editing programs and chopping up songs to make my own creations. I have since gotten a little more sophisticated, gear-wise, but the heart of discovery and basement tinkering is still prevalent in my tracks. I've made hundreds, maybe thousands, of tracks over the years, and released a number of albums recently over the internet. I'm constantly exploring new methods and techniques and enjoying every second of it.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I haven't played live yet, but I plan to do my first live show later this summer.
Your musical influences
I have to give huge respect to Richard D. James and his many pseudonyms. I really think he is a genius when it comes to composition and conveying emotion. I also really like Orbital for their brilliant melodies and creativity. And I've recently gotten into Klaus Nomi, who I think was just a ridiculously interesting character, and someone I am sad to not have been able to see live. There are many others (Chemical Bros., Juno Reactor, Kid Koala, to name a few), but I'll leave it at that.
What equipment do you use?
Mainly my MicroKorg keyboard, which I frequently use as a MIDI controller for a whole slew of VSTi's. I also use the TB 303 emulator Rebirth ('cause I can't seem to get my hands on a real one), as well as several circuit-bent instruments of my own design.
Anything else?
Wubba.
