Music and verse by Judy Ashe Barrett - along with several musical presentations featuring the AUTOHARP, check out her live poetry performance at the Times Festival of Reading 2004 held in November at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg. And accompanied by the autoharp also named the Chorded Zither, an instrument unto itself, Judy presents original and eclectic music in the old style. Hope you'll enjoy the music and poetry.
Band/artist history
I have written poetry all of my life. A few years ago I bought an autoharp, because I love the sound. In time, the poems started coming to me with chords. I have been reading in public for many many years. So it was easy to just add the harp. I have performed at folk festivals in Florida and throughout the south, and at several poetry and music events in the Tampa Bay area. I have had some wonderful teachers, and I am still learning my art, craft.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Folk festivals, open mics, anywhere I get the opportunity. I love it - it is a grand lot of fun. The special times happen when the audience is right there with me. The energy is flowing in all directions, and the magic begins. I have also had some special times when I was playing with another musician and the communication was on a level beyond words. A poetry circle is also wonderful when the words and ideas flow thick and fast and I start thinking of new ways to mix some of it new poems.
Your musical influences
I suppose my roots are in folk music. The groups like Peter Paul and Mary were my favorites while my classmates were into rock. Later, when I started studying the harp, I was heavily influenced by Ivan Styles and Bryan Bowers. I recently discovered the Child Ballads. I like lyrics that tell a story.
