J-Sev

I DJ and produce hip hop music. I started my thing in the Midwest where underground hip hop from independant labels dominated the scene and was my main focus. I've since moved to New York and sharpened my skills over the past months with my people at Fatbeats records. Now I'm producing beats that I think reflect a bit of both locations, and also a nostalgia for late 80s to early 90s era hip hop. As a DJ I try to play a mix of todays crowd pleasers with some old school stuff and underground to appeal to large audience but also respect the great music of the past.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
I am always working to improve my beats and my djing. Hopefully one day you won't have to come to this stupid site to hear my music.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I'm about to do the first of hopefully many monthly parties at a place calle the M Bar down on Broome street. I also play at the 24 Seven lounge on Eldridge and E Houston in NYC from time to time. You can also find me on the tables at Fatbeats on increasingly rare occasions.
Your musical influences
All kinds of hip hop. Outside that genre, I usually check for Prince, Radiohead, Stereolab, Charles Mingus. Some of my favorite producers are Pete Rock, Hi-Tek, DJ Premier, RZA, Prefuse 73, Madlib.
What equipment do you use?
MPC1000, Pro Tools, Reason LE, Technics 1200s, a guitar.
