I originally started recording myself play to track my progress and work on playing songs I had learned all the way through, like in live performances.  The songs here are a few of the ones I like to play - some I have written, some by other people.

Your musical influences

Bob Dylan, Sarah McLachlan, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Alphaville, Depeche Mode, Stevie Nicks, Guns 'N Roses, Ari Hest ... and many others, I'm sure.  It's not a very cohesive list, just bits and pieces of things other artists have done that I've learned from or have meant something to me in some way.

What equipment do you use?

Pretty minimal ... an acoustic guitar, an electric, an effects box, a keyboard, and a voice (i.e. mine).  

Because I originally started recording mainly as a way to see what new songs would sound like when played in front of other people, almost all of the songs I have recorded were done one shot each. (The exceptions are the tracks where I experimented with adding a second instrumental which I recorded later and then mixed together.) When I was originally trying to figure out how to do this, that seemed easiest and least complex as far as equipment goes. You can really go crazy with all that gear. There may be a better way to go about it, but I like the keep it simple approach.

Initially, I just put a tape recorder or video camera next to where I was playing, which worked ok, but lately I have been experimenting with using a minidisc player to amplify a microphone enough so the signal is loud enough to be recorded on a computer, which makes it sound a little better.  For that, I use a free program called Audacity and the little sound recorder that comes with Windows for editing (minimal editing at best).  Nothing complicated ... I just try to play it right the first time, though granted, that usually takes several tries!
