Johnny Colaw
I currently play alone. I play piano, organ and guitar. I write my own music and lyrics, and also love to draw. My musical influences range from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Beethoven, Primus to Michael Franks.
I love to rock, and like songs with soft intros that lead into heavy jams and instrumental riffs, reminiscent of Stairway to Heaven or Free Bird.
I have only recorded a couple of my songs, but I have written a couple dozen and will be adding them soon. I would love to play in a band, or bring some musicians or singers in to jam and sing my material.
I was born and raised in Wichita, KS but now live with my wife and three teenage children in Kansas City, MO.
I hope you like my music!
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Self taught piano player. A little guitar. I love to write music, and especially love to play my baby grand piano. I hope to do an album featuring my original lyrics, music and artwork to fulfill a lifelong dream. Always ready to jam with someone or try and put music to someone else's lyics.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I have sat in with some bands in the past, but am not currently doing so. I would like to do some open mike nights or small venues if the opportunity arose. I have played some weddings and stuff.
Your musical influences
Lynyrd Skynyrd (Billy Powell), Yes, Elton John, Commodores, Beethoven (Moonlight Sonata and Fur Elise) - I love a wide range of music. I think my songs range from easy listening to Rock and Roll.
What equipment do you use?
Shulz Baby Grand Piano, Ovation Celebrity Deluxe guitar. Used to have a neat ARP Quad and intend to get a Roland 88 key and perhaps a Clavinator.
Anything else?
I want to get better and explore new horizons in my music. I love the keyboard, but need more experience on the guitar and look forward to meeting someone to show me the ropes on the guitar.
These first recordings are old and raw. But they will have to do until I record new ones.
Be sure and check out "Scuff", with my son John Colaw IV on drums, playing with his friends:
