Johnny Blas

San Francisco, CA  USA
October 26, 1999
Every successful band reaches at least one crossroads, at which new key members, new directions and/or a solidification of approach provides an impetus for further achievements. Johnny Blas' upcoming CD, King Conga, his third CuBop release, displays several new developments and a new level of maturity which promises bright sounds for the future. Johnny has been leading his band since 1992, but more than ever his is a young, hungry group, ready to prove themselves. The musicians include a mix of hot new comers and established Latin jazz players. The list includes percussionist Angel Rodriguez and trombonist Humberto Ruiz, Kerry Loeschen, Edwin Blas and Dan Weinstein, guitarist Mark Gutierrez and bassist Paul Perez, and of course, Mr. Blas hitting the skins, plus he can even be caught playing flute on a couple of tracks. The band follows precedents set in the first three albums with strong new originals by Johnny Blas. The signature trombone heavy style remains a constant feature and the use of acoustic guitar adds a unique twist. Standards like "Little Sunflower" and "Sidewinder" are given the Blas touch. With four solid albums under his belt, the maturing Mr Blas and band are ready for international recognition and exposure that their playing deserves.
