HARD ROCK BASSIST WITH TONS OF SOUL. FROM HARD ROCK, BLUES, JAZZ, R&B(MOTOWN), HEAVY METAL TO SHEER ROCK-N-ROLL WHICH IS WHAT FLOWS THROUGH HIS VEINS, JJ VEL HOLDS THE BOTTOM DOWN! CHECK OUT THE MUSIC SECTION ON THIS PAGE WHERE WE WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED ON NEW SONGS FROM EITHER JJ'S ALBUM OR FROM SESSIONS HE HAS DONE TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF THE MANY STYLES HE CAN BLEND INTO. HERE ARE SOME COMMENTS FROM NEWSPAPERTAXI.NET IN WHICH JJ VEL PLAYED SOME HARDROCK/BLUES WITH THE SOULRIVER: The band plays laid back all the while that fat Fender Bass fills in the void with its fleshy tone. At mid point every one drops out leaving J.J’s fat ass bass alone and thundering. NEWSPAPERTAXI.NET Bass melodic and sexy, Vocals, sultry and warm. Guitar solos, bluesy and soulful, I can float on this riverboat all night long. The instrumentation falls back one at a time. Vocals exit, then drums, guitar, djembe and we’re left with J.J’s solo melodic bass to take us out. Sweet! NEWSPAPERTAXI.NET hypnotic groove, throbbing + pulsing everyone comes to the front. The band exits on a high note leaving me wanting more. NEWSPAPERTAXI.NET a healthy slice of Soul, Blistering pumping Bass!! Newspapertaxi.net ALL REVIEWS: Reviewed by JAMES B CAVANAUGH
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Playing since the ripe age of 12, JJ modeled much of his playing after some of his favorite bassists........john paul jones, Tom Hamilton, Cliff Burton, Geezer Butler, Billy Sheehan, John Myung, jaco, james jamerson. Playing professionally with bands since the age of 14, JJ has frequented every possible venue in the New York City area, places like CBGB'S and the Limelight were some of the most frequented and most successful venues. JJ Played with countless bands in his 15 yrs as a professional player, He joined FLYTRAP and toured with them intensely. The band released an album recorded at the "Theatre" on Delancey st (Black Crowes etc) JJ left the project due to internal tension with the members and he joined the ranks of noisenet from the bronx. the band consisted of veteran musician much older then JJ whom were all on labels. The musicians were very seasoned and had a very impressive sound. Unfortunately, JJ found the band at odds too often and decided to part with the band. Doing sessions for commercial as well as non-commercial acts, JJ continues his quest for the ultimate band.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
LIME LIGHT WAS JUMPIN. BEEN THERE 4 TIMES BEFORE THEY TOOK IT AWAY. CB's is always great, that is until some industry jerk off turns it into a lounge.
Your musical influences
I love watching Live Queen, Aerosmith etc it shows you what a show really is about. I also love james jamerson of that ol' motown era, it shows what bass playing was all about before all of the 12 yr olds got record deals. I'm a receptor of all great music as long as it is executed in it's appropriate fashion I dig it.
What equipment do you use?
MUSICMAN STINGRAY 5, MUSICMAN STINGRAY 4, FENDER P 4, CUSTOM ALVAREZ 6 STRING W/ EMG PUPS AND ADDED 3 BAND EQ. APHEX DI BOX, KORG PANDORAS BOX,SSANRLING DOG BASS WAH, MONSTER CABLES, HARTKE/GK HEADS, HARTKE/AMPEG CABINETS.
