Band/artist history
"the most moving and melodic guitar playing in recent memory" Sam Ash music. "a master technician" Gig magazine You don't realize its power at first. It creeps up on you like a rolling fog on a starless night revealing itself only under the brilliant glow of a midsummer's moon. The subtle complexity of the music woven by acoustic guitar master Jim Goodin lulls you, draws you in and welcomes you to a comfortable, secluded spot. While a sharp ear may spot Ralph Towner's and Michael Hedges' influences in Jim Goodin's elegant fingerstyle techniques and inspired harmonic textures, reducing Goodin to a simple clone doesn't do him, or his music, justice. Make no mistake: Jim Goodin's acoustic creations have zest, zeal and originality. His blend of acoustic Celtic/New Age/world music showcases a percussive attack rife with pull-offs, tantalizing tapping and multi-layered, multi-cultural musical voicings. The transplanted Arkansas native now living in Brooklyn, NY, has followed a musical path shaped by his search for truth and beauty through music. Because of this, Jim Goodin has not only attained a high level of technical proficiency on his instrument, but has never ceased to shut off that inner voice that beseeches him to create compositions through incredible blasts of energy. He is currently busy with side projects, including erecting a new label, Wood and Wire Music, a kind of musicians' collective, as well as recently releasing his second solo recording, Through The Door, which further explores the percussive and spiritual feel of his earlier work. "My path of discovery came from many places," says Goodin. "The work I'm doing presently with the instrument began when I was in my 20s and I feel that now I have finally set upon the path my life has been leading me to." Jim has recently completed a new book of original compositions and arrangements for Mel Bay which will be packed with the guitarist's personal exercises as well as examples of his unique fingerpicking approach. "My playing has also presented many other opportunities for me as now I perform as a GHS Strings endorsing artist in clinics in Sam Ash music stores in the New York and New England region," says Goodin. Through his musical explorations, his teachings and clinic appearances, Jim believes he's coming closer and closer to a goal that was once elusive, but now is in focus. "In a sense, all of my life I've been looking for something - answers and a kind of awakening - and I finally feel as though I have come close to attaining them," says Goodin. Jim Goodin performs as a solo artist, in a feature setting with Language of 3 co-partner/founder/guitarist Matt Richards, and as the leader of the WorldBeat ensemble East of Where co-featuring percussionists Ray Istorico and Will Romano. Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes, New York area as well as New England and occasionally select parts of the country. Booking interests: booking@woodandwiremusic.com. Special moment was at one of my clinics that I was doing at Sam Ash Philadelphia. A gentleman there heard me and told me later he was so moved that he rediscovered his music and his muse. What more can I want as an artist!
Your musical influences
Will Ackerman, Michael Hedges, Steve Reich are probably my father the son and holy one frankly. There are others but they each have had a profound bearing on what I do. Certainly the work of bassist Michael Manring as well and as far as song writers Peter Gabriel and Richard Thompson.
What equipment do you use?
Lowden and Seagull Guitars
