i play acoustic guitar - ranging in style from folk to indie to psuedo-country to emo. i attempt to write lyrics that are honest and allegorical and to use content material that is often overlooked (though mainly the songs just end up being love songs in one way or another).
Band/artist history
I picked up a guitar at 18 after doing spoken word seriously for a few years. Started playing out around 23 and recorded my first EP in the spring of 2004. Have toured in support of EP since.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
sure. mostly in small dives and coffee shops. I used to organize a singer/songwriter night in the round up in Indianapolis called the Fractured Folk Showcase. It rocked socks!
Your musical influences
Bob Dylan, Hayden, Elliott Smith, Damien Jurado, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Michelle Shocked, Ani Difranco, Bright Eyes, Old 97's, Leonard Cohen
What equipment do you use?
An Alvarez acoustic guitar with a Dean Markley pick up. Occasionally i'll play this shitty Peevey i picked up for about $100.
Anything else?
PLEASE! leave any and all critques and/or reviews on the message board. any and all input is greatly appreciated!
Yes, I'm listening again. I like the chordal coloration, voice overs and instrumental melody in Pardon Me.
Smoking makes me think of drone strings and open tuning. I've got really crappy speakers on my computer, were you using open tuning? Nice slide! Got any more?
Your songs are meaningful, honest and full of heart. Do you have a band?
Hi Jes,
I'm listening as I write. I feel as though I know what you mean. I mean, I feel like your songs a lot. I don't know what that feeling is. It's hard to put in words but you've done a great job of it.
You've got a great voice and although I like the conversational style of your songs I am left wanting to hear something more. Something more vocal? Maybe work in some contrast to break up the song in sections. Change. Ummm....what's the word I'm looking for? Variation, rhythmic variation in the guitar part, bass runs, arppegios? Basically, good songs, great vocal ability and music is definitely where you should be. I wish I could write like that!
Hey Jes
Its your dad. We went down to Harbor House last Fri. and got the beds laid to The Call, Rachel is Weeping, Winds of Change, and The Piper. No vocals as yet and still have a lot of "punch-ins" and over tracks to do, but all in all, it went ok.
Got to the studio at 9:10 am, Steve and I didnt leave until 10:00 pm lol Long day.
Hope all is well for you. You can call your old dad every now and then. lol
take care
honesty people!
