Jess Pillmore

St. Augustine, FL  USA
April 21, 2001
Insightful and intelligent lyrics. Strong driving melodies. A power house voice that stills a bar. Songs that speak to the mind and the heart. Her music makes the connection and leaves with you, to turn in your head days after you have seen her. Her melodies and lyrics feel comfortable - like someone out there knows you. Love and fear- distrust and growth - the wear and tear of life. It is all their in a rhythm that flickers and haunts you.
Band/artist history
Jess has worked her way to songwriting through professional training, national/international, in theater, dance, performance art, stage combat (1999 National Best Female Actor/Combatant and the 2000 Founderís Award in Unarmed by the Society of American Fight Directors ) and choreography for dance and theater. At 18, she was recognized for her dance and percussion skills by STOMP. The range of her professional work includes workshops, physical theatre, comedy improv, choreography, stage combat, and creative writing. Her work has been performed in an expansive mix - from educational institutes and regional theaters to Off Broadway. Taking her poetry to the stage in New York cabarets, the Music came as a natural accompaniment to her spoken word performances. Jess has performed her music in NYC at C-Note and The Duplex Cabaret, in Williamstown, MA., Las Vegas, NV, and in Jacksonville at Fuel, Backstreet and Jackrabbits. Jess can be heard frequently on Planet Radio 93.3 and Flagler Radio WFCF. Her theatrical and dance background gives her a graceful and amusing stage presence, making her an easy performer to watch and enjoy. And her voice is one with the passion in her work.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I love to play live, try and reach new people with my askewed take on life. Because my music pulls from so many different styles, I get to jam with a wide variety of musicians. One night you might hear a folk finger picker with me, or a flutist, and then some nights it breaks loose with a full rock band. It opens up different moments within the songs and keeps things lively.
Your musical influences
Ani DiFranco, Sam Cooke, U2, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, Tori Amos, Patty Larkin, Philip Glass, Stephen Sondheim and right now I can't get Don Ross out of my cd player, an unbelievable guitar player!
