Jason Spitz is a young songwriter and guitarist with a fresh sound full of clever lyrics, interesting characters, and sincere emotion. He independently wrote, arranged, and recorded his debut CD "Anything You Want", which he released in the summer of 2002. Jason's music taps into something universal, creating stories and experiences that everyone can relate to.
Band/artist history
Inspired by my dad, I started playing guitar at age 14. I picked it up quickly, and began composing three and four chord songs, but I couldn't find lyrics or melodies. Fast forward four years, past my obligatory Metallica phase, when I wrote my first songs as a senior in high school. I played several open mics and coffeehouses around town during the summer, and bought a cheap Tascam Portastudio on which I recorded and mixed my early demos. During the summer of 2002, I bought an equally cheap digital 8-track studio and re-recorded my earlier material while adding a few new songs. That ended up as "Anything You Want", my 10-track independent release. I played occasional gigs and coffeehouses around campus, and recently had my first public show in Evanston at Nevins Live.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
School takes up most of my time, so I don't play live much any more. I promote my music through the internet. Anyone can download my songs from this site or from www.mp3.com/jasonspitz completely for free.
Your musical influences
Great songwriters like John Prine, Dar Williams, and Steve Goodman, and also the Beatles in terms of chords and progressions that are simple yet unique, intricate but memorable.
What equipment do you use?
The entire album was recorded using only a Guild DCE-5 guitar and a Shure microphone. How's that for a shoestring budget?
