Pianist by training, songwriter by passion, and a lifelong lover of music. My style tends to fall broadly into the "Musical" genre, with occasional ventures outside my comfort zone, but my passion has always been music for the stage.
Band/artist history
The love of music started early for me, beginning with piano and choral work at the age of 8. Continuing through high school, my emphasis was on choral and stage works. My first musical production numbers were written at age 16 for a high school production called the "The Queen of Hearts." I also wrote choral and solo works performed in church and concert settings, and personally performed in musicals, choir, band, and madrigals. In college, I continued to pursue music interests, singing and playing for musicals, opera, classical voice work and orchestra, and studying piano with Fern Nolte Davidson. My senior project as a Music Education major was to complete a song cycle of Gerard Manley Hopkins poems set to music, called "Inscape", performed in concert. I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. Since then, I have performed in light opera and musical productions in several states, written instrumental music for the stage, produced a cabaret-style benefit concert of his songs, and composed the soundtrack to a commercial TV production.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I'm usually writing for others, so I rarely play and sing my own music live. To tell the truth, I'm a bit on the shy side. It has been known to happen, though. I like to match the music to a voice; each voice has its own story to tell and can tell that story like no one else. I'll sing my own from time to time, but I'd rather sit back and listen to the magic that other people can make with them. My voice is nowhere near the caliber of a real singer. I hope to write songs that others, who are much better singers, will line up to sing.
Your musical influences
Broadway musicals, cabaret singers, the standards, Alan Menken and Tim Rice, Stephen Sondheim, Harold Arlen and Yip Harberg, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, the "crooners", Edith Piaf, Cat Stevens, John Williams ... (and the list goes on and on)...
What equipment do you use?
Currently I use a Roland JV-1010 as my primary sound source and various software packages for recording, editing and mixing the final sound file.
