Mariachis Ska in Hawaii with Mardi Gras Indians. The vocals sound like James Taylor having a bad day or Michael Stipe having a good day. The lyrics lie somehwere between XTC, Randy Newman, Crash Test Dummies and Loudon Wainwright III.
Band/artist history
Jake made a few CDs, got played on a few stations a few times (WXPN in Philadelphia was one of them) played a lot of bookstores, coffee shops and bookstores (and clubs like Phillys Tin Angel, the Mermaid Inn, Steel City and the now defunct Point), and then he formed the Jarana 7, who now record this music in the corner of his apartment. These songs are inspired by the purity of sound you find in Jimmy Cliff, Johnny Cash and the late great father of Guajira de Salon, Guillermo Portabales. The lyrics are Jakes tried and true original singer/songwriter compositions played using an array of guitars, using the same approach as in a Mariachi band. There are no drums, but rather a series of small to large guitars with differing voices. All together, I got up to 32 strings playing at once. I dont use a capo, I just get a smaller guitar. Peace - Jake
